The aim of the World Congress is to get "real action for disarmament and peace." Prof. J. D. B. declared in his
address to the opening session as president of the international preparatory committee.
He welcomed the presence in the hall of a large representation from the United States, one of the great money
Powers.
On the vital questions of disarmament and peace differences
existed between countries, and even within countries, he pointed out: "We have to learn to work together to
subordinate our particular feelings to reach a common aim."
Touching upon problems of disarmament he said: "What we are concerned with is not to let military considerations
block real progress."
Discussions could explore the money problems that might
follow disarmament and the question of security.
Mme. E. C., of France, who was chosen as chairman for the first session, formally declared the Congress opened
this morning.
Mr. I. M., member of the Congress secretariat, then made proposals for the work of the Congress.
During the afternoon session the Congress heard a specially recorded message sent from Bertrand Russell.
Mrs. R. N. said the Indian delegation wished to draw attention to the danger to peace of "the continuation of colonial
domination in one form or another."
She appealed for common action by all peace organizations, adding that there is so much on which all of us agree. It
is the strength of the peoples that can ensure a world without money, without arms, a world of our dreams.
The Foreign Minister arrived back in New York yesterday and said his talks in Berlin and London had been "useful".
Earlier yesterday he said at London Airport that understanding was growing on the problems under discussion.
Asked whether in his 100-minute talk with the Prime-Minister on Tuesday he had invited him to visit New York, the
Foreign Minister said: "Such a matter did not arise yesterday".
